A student sends an AI his term paper and gets it back improved. He reads what he has now written, and it sounds plausible. He doesn’t know where the text contradicts him and where it agrees with him; he doesn’t even know whether there is anywhere he ought to object. Analog education reform starts exactly here — not with the tool, but with the question of what substance has to exist in the learner before a tool can become one at all.
It is a pedagogical demand, not a lukewarm suggestion. Education, in its basic acts — reading, writing, drawing, understanding — is reset to physical means: printed books instead of screens, hand-drawing before digital modelling, older teaching methods in older styles before any software, listening aloud and taking notes by hand before automatic transcription. Only once the hand knows what it has drawn, the eye what it has seen, the ear what it has heard, does the digital tool join in. Not as a teacher, but as an amplifier of an already trained mind.
#The Asymmetry Between Learning and Applying
Whoever has mastered a language can use a translation program. Whoever hasn’t is mastered by the program. This asymmetry holds everywhere education aims at substance rather than operating competence. An architect who has spent years designing spaces with pencil and paper can use a CAD program as an accelerator; an architecture student who begins with the program does not learn architecture but a particular piece of software. The lines the program offers replace the lines he himself would have had to draw in order to know what an axis is. Goethe called what is lost here, in Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship (Goethe, 1796), self-activity: one’s own bringing-forth, the only form in which education truly becomes education.
What the architecture example lays bare holds equally for writing, arithmetic, reading. A language the learner never had in his own mouth, he does not have. An argument he has not made himself, he cannot examine. A line his hand has not drawn, he does not see.

#Humboldt, Schiller, and the Image of the Educated Person
The demand connects to a precise concept of education. Wilhelm von Humboldt (1767–1835) defined education as the “highest and most proportionate formation” of human powers into a whole (cf. Humboldt, 1793). For him, a university meant a “community of teachers and learners” (cf. Humboldt, 1810, On the Internal and External Organization of the Higher Scientific Institutions in Berlin) — a relation between persons in which something is passed on that does not exist in texts, slides, and tools alone. Friedrich Schiller (1759–1805) extended this image in the Letters on the Aesthetic Education of Man (Schiller, 1795) with the play-drive: that middle ground between sensuousness and form in which the human being first becomes free and whole. Education, thought in this line, is not an information process. It is the shaping of a capacity on materially, bodily experienceable substance.
Karl Christian Friedrich Krause (1781–1832), a teacher of philosophical pedagogy, emphasised the relation between teacher and learner as an essential link in this process. Confucius (551–479 BCE) saw lifelong learning as a practice that begins with the clarification of concepts (“all disorder in the state arises from confusion of concepts”) and finds its purpose in the matured judgement of the noble one. In all these lines, education lies in the human capacity to test, by the measure of one’s own experience, what is true and what is not.
#Why Digital Front-Loading Acts as Pathogen
When children first meet the material on a screen, what they take for knowledge shifts. Reading becomes scrolling. Writing becomes typing with autocorrect suggestions. Drawing becomes selecting from templates. Listening becomes playback at increased speed. What drops out, in each case, is the trace an act leaves in the body. Without that trace, the later point of comparison is missing — the one against which a digital result could be checked as right or wrong.
The lexicon entry on AI psychosis makes exactly this point visible using the adult form: whoever has never worked through a subject falls for the coherent answer of a language model, unable to recognise its weaknesses. In children and adolescents, the same mechanism works earlier and deeper. They don’t even have the yardstick against which the output could be tested. What they take for understanding is the recognition of a plausibility-shape.
A related diagnosis holds on the teaching side. Digitised education “functions” frictionlessly: tasks distributed, tests automatically graded, statistics clean. This frictionlessness is a form of self-soothing within the pedagogical system — a running apparatus that relieves the teacher and helps no student who stays with the matter. Healing is not the right word here, but the structure is the same: a coherent-sounding story replaces a difficult encounter.
#What This Doesn’t Mean
Analog education reform is not Luddism. It is not the reflex to smash every machine because machines replace labour. Nor is it nostalgia. Nobody wants the hectograph back. What is at stake is a sequence: the human act first, then the digital tool. Only once the student has worked the mathematics in his head may the calculator arrive. Only once the student has formulated texts herself may the language model help smooth them. Only once the architect has designed spaces by hand may CAD give him speed.
This sequence is not a luxury. It is the condition under which a tool becomes a tool at all, rather than a substitute for the person who should be wielding it. AI is a tool for trained minds, not a teacher for unformed ones. Whoever blurs this distinction is not building a better school, but one that takes its students off its own hands.
#Connection to Philosophical Practice
The same structure carries through into philosophical accompaniment. A maieutic practice without an empirical basis in the learner has nothing it could bring into the world; it only draws out what is already laid down, which presupposes that something was laid down. Judgement matures on the material, not on the list of materials. Philosophical accompaniment depends on people in whom experience has grown; the precondition for grown experience is that somewhere in life something was once carried out with one’s own hands, without a suggestion, without a filter, without correction assistance.
Analog education reform recreates exactly this precondition. It is the pedagogical prerequisite for every later form of accompaniment: a person who can read because he has read; who can write because he has written; who can think because he has thought. Only then can a tool that is faster than he is serve to accelerate him. Before that, it is a substitute.
